Yesterday I heard Born Free played on a bus. My mind flashed back to my junior high school year, when I was chosen to join the school choir. It was our first “real” competition, since we had to go to another town and it was held in one of the most prestigious universities here. For fourteen year old girls, going to an actual university to participate in their national event is a super day that can’t go wrong.
And then I made a mistake. I was the tallest so I stood leftmost in the last row and I was the first to go. And instead of going to the door on the left which was the nearest exit, I went to the right and so the rest of the line followed me.
We didn’t win and while some of my friends thought I took part in our loss, the truth was simple: we sucked. Everyone knew this even before we went on stage. But of course when something goes wrong you always need to blame somebody else.
